Ashley Young could return to Watford on the first day of next season after rejoining Aston Villa.

The full-back had held talks with the Hornets about a possible move back to Vicarage Road, as he assessed his options.

It is understood that the full-back could have also stayed in Italy with Inter, while Burnley were also credited with interest as well.

Assurances around playing time played a part in the 35-year-old's decision and eventually he opted to return to Villa.

Watford host Aston Villa in the first game of next season, meaning Young could kick off his second spell with the midlands club at the Vic.

After his move was completed, the left-back said he still has plenty to show despite his age.

“When I heard of the interest from Aston Villa, it was straight to my agent, ‘get a deal done, whatever you can, get a deal done’,” he told Villa TV.

“I think someone said (about me), ‘he’s coming to the end of his career’, ‘he hasn’t got that hunger any more’, ‘he’s just going there for a swansong’…

“That’s not me at all, I’ve still got that winning mentality, that winners’ attitude, that desire and hunger to go and win.”
