Watford legend Allan Smart has joined Abingdon United as their new head of football.

Smart has signed a three-year contract with the Uhlsport Hellenic League Division 1 East side ahead of the 2021/22 season.

The 46-year-old is best known for scoring in the Hornets' 2-0 win over Bolton Wanderers in the 1998/99 First Division play-off final, which saw them promoted to the top tier of English football.

His new role will have a particular focus on developing young talent in the area.

Upon his appointment, Smart said: “I am excited to be working with the club and to help create opportunities for young footballers keen to make their way in the sport.

"The introduction of education programmes, improved development pathways and local engagement provisions is key to help young coaches and players progress in their careers.

"I am looking forward to be able offer my support and advice at the club in all football related areas and enable players and coaches to start their football journey, creating a platform to take the club to a higher level of football.”

Abingdon Chairman Alan Midwinter said: “It’s fantastic that Allan has come on board, sharing the club’s vision and desire to provide a blend of footballing opportunity and learning for young persons within the community.

"These initiatives will strengthen the links between Abingdon United and the community we have long been a part of and provides a platform for the development of local talent that we know is in our area.”
