Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has apologised to Claudio Ranieri after the Watford head coach accused the Gunners of having no respect during the Hornets' 1-0 defeat at the Emirates.

Arteta said that his side were "honest" and had no bad intentions during the match.

The two coaches had a disagreement after full time, with Ranieri suggesting the hosts showed a lack of respect, with Watford putting the ball out of play so a player could receive treatment, only for Arsenal not to return possession to them, in the build up to the only goal of the match.

Speaking to Sky Sports, the Arsenal boss said: "I cannot think about any club, any team, that is more honest and sometimes naive as us. So there is no bad intentions on that at all.

"If anything, I apologise, I haven't seen the action but [Ranieri] has that feeling. I just apologise but we compete the right way all the time and using the law and that's it."

Ranieri also felt that there was a foul on Ismaila Sarr in the build up to the goal, but Arteta chose not to offer his opinion on the incident.

"I'm focused on the performance and how well we did it," he said. "We won the match, we got a clean sheet and we are happy."
