Former Watford defender Jose Holebas has retired from professional football, according to reports.

Website Inside Futbol is this afternoon claiming that the former Greece international has called time on his career at the age of 37.

Holebas arrived Vicarage Road from Roma back in 2015, a deal he claims was done behind his back, and left before the final game of the 2019/20 season when the Hornets' relegation from the Premier League was confirmed.

After leaving Watford he went on to play for Greek side Olympiacos for a second spell before joining German outfit Bayern Alzenau for whom he scored two goals in 11 matches.

During his time with the Hornets, he scored six goals from 124 appearances and provided 14 assists.

He also collected 41 yellow cards and two red cards in that time, which was the worst booking rate in the history of the Premier League, according to statistics published in October 2019.

The stats focused on the number of bookings and sendings off collected by players who had played 38 or more times in the Premier League and it found that Holebas' record of collecting a yellow every 2.72 games was, at the time, the lowest rate in the history of the division.

During his career he made 508 appearances for club and country, scoring 39 goals altogether.
