Ray Lewington has said that both he and manager Roy Hodgson will not walk away from Watford before the end of the season, and would even consider staying longer.

The Hornets all but confirmed their relegation to the Championship with an 11th consecutive home defeat on Saturday, as they threw away a 1-0 lead to Burnley in the dying stages of the game.

However, the assistant manager said he and Hodgson would see the job through to the end and may be open to the idea of sticking around beyond the summer.

"If they ask us we will definitely put in [some consideration]," said Lewington. "But we don't know anything yet as well. You know the situation, we signed to the end of the year and that was going to be it, so we're still in that situation.

"We're going to see it through. Listen, the sides that come up are always going to find it very difficult because there's a massive gap now and people don't realise the gap.

"You can have all your strategies and everything about what you're going to do, but unless you are experienced in going into playing the sides that are in the Premier League, week in week out, it's very difficult."

Asked how big of a rebuild the club needed over the summer, Lewington said that was a question for the owners to consider at the end of the season.

"That's for the the owners to decide," he said. "I always think in times like this when you've had a bad defeat, big questions like that are the questions that are not easy to answer.

"You need to sit down once it's all done and go away and think about it, which I'm sure the owners will do."
