Striker Shaq Forde has put pen to paper on his first professional contract with Watford.

Having only turned 18 in May, Forde’s progression through the ranks at Vicarage Road is a good sign that the club intends to produce its own talent – something it was once famed for.

Both chairman Scott Duxbury and head coach Rob Edwards have expressed a desire to give homegrown players more opportunities.

Forde began last season in the Under-18's, moved into the Under-23's and then made his first-team debut as a substitute in the FA Cup tie at Leicester in January.

The forward, who joined the club as a seven-year-old, also had a brief spell on loan at nearby Kings Langley in the Southern League Premier Division South. He made a quick impression, scoring twice, winning a penalty and earning an assist in only three outings.

Kings Langley manager Chris Cummins, who worked at Watford under Graham Taylor as academy assistant director, said Forde is a real talent.

“I'd been trying to get Shaq for a while before I finally did, and when he came in he did really great things, and made an instant impact,” said Cummins.

“Then Watford called him back again after three games and he went with the first team. I’m really pleased he’s been offered a contract.

“Shaq has an excellent attitude, his work ethic is great and he has a knack of going past people.

“He played wide right for us but he could play anywhere in a front line. He’s got real pace and a sweet left foot. He was so dynamic and positive. If he keeps working hard and learning, he’ll do well. It’s great to see the club giving the young lads a chance.”

The son of former Hornets striker Fabian Forde, Forde gained valuable senior experience by travelling with the first team to Liverpool and being on the bench against Brentford.

“I’m very excited to continue training with the first-team, it’s a step up I’ve liked and embraced. I can’t wait to show my talent and push on,” said Forde.

“My aim is to get into the team, do my best to stay there and help get into the Premier League, getting a few goals and assists on the way.”
