One interesting feature of the friendly with Bolton was Watford starting the second half with Hassane Kamara as a right wing-back.

In fact, two of the Hornets’ best chances of the game stemmed from the Frenchman curling crosses in from the right flank which Ismaila Sarr met with a couple of great headers that forced top-class saves.

“I wanted to have a look at Hassane on that side of the pitch,” said head coach Rob Edwards.

“He’s a very interesting player because of the obvious attributes that he’s got. If you can get him in one v one situations, he’s really dangerous. He can give a defender a five-yard start and still go past him.

“I thought it would be interesting to see him on the opposite side and I saw some good things.”

One of the stand-out performers of pre-season so far has been Joao Pedro.

“He always wants the ball,” said Edwards. “We’re going to continue to keep pushing and driving him in terms of what he does in and out of possession.

“He’s got so much potential and we know he can still improve in those areas. It’s our job to get the best out of him.

“There's no doubting his talent, no doubting at all. What we have to do is look at how we set ourselves up to get the best out of him. And then in turn he has to be pushing himself, whether that’s pressing from the front or showing for the ball.”

Midfielder Tom Dele-Bashiru has also caught the eye after returning from his season-long loan at Reading.

“Tom has had a good three weeks,” said Edwards. “He’s got a fantastic attitude and I can tell he’s trying his absolute best in every session and every game.

“I expect that from all my players, but Tom has worked incredibly hard.”
