Former Watford defender Derek Agyakwa has joined Port Vale following a successful trial.

The 20-year-old, who was released by the Hornets at the end of last season, was part of the Valiants squad that travelled to Spain for a pre-season training camp and featured in friendlies against Kidsgrove Athletic and Dundee United.

Boss Darrell Clarke told the club website: “Derek is coming in as a player that we can help to develop and grow.

“We are looking forward to working with him, he has shown a real willingness to learn and improve his game, and his time on trial with us showcased the ability that he already possesses.

“He is someone that we can develop for the future and is a somebody that we are looking to build into the player we know he is capable of being.”

Agyakwa joined the Hornets from FC Twente in January 2020 and made two appearances in the Carabao Cup at the start of the following season before moving to Como on loan for the rest of the campaign.

However, the move was cut short in January last year after the centre back made only four appearances in Italy.
