Watford striker Ashley Fletcher is set to join Championship rivals Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan, the Watford Observer understands.

The former Middlesbrough forward has been looking for a new club since returning from New York Red Bulls last month following an unsuccessful loan spell.

The 26-year-old moved to the MLS outfit, who had an option to make the move permanent, at the end of February, but made only seven appearances lasting a total of 250 minutes.

Fletcher signed a five-year deal after moving to Vicarage Road on a free transfer last summer, but was limited to just 27 minutes of Premier League action.

However, he enjoyed more success in the Carabao Cup, scoring in both appearances as the Hornets beat Crystal Palace 1-0 before losing to 3-1 to Stoke City.

It is being reported Fletcher is heading to the DW Stadium to undergo a medical and the Watford Observer understands the move is expected to be successfully completed.

Leam Richardson’s side have drawn their opening two matches of the season following their promotion from League One.
