Former Watford head coach Rob Edwards could be in line for a very quick return to management with several national newspapers reporting his is to be interviewed for the vacant job at Middlesbrough.

Chris Wilder was shown the door at the Riverside after Boro were beaten 1-0 at Coventry on Saturday, leaving them in the Championship relegation zone.

Ironically, Edwards’ final victory as Watford head coach came against Middlesbrough at Vicarage Road on August 30, when Vakoun Bayo’s stoppage-time goal gave the Hornets a 2-1 win.

Edwards lost his job at Vicarage Road last week after just 11 games in charge, and John Percy of the Daily and Sunday Telegraph is one of a number of journalists reporting that Edwards is to be interviewed this week for the Middlesbrough job, saying he is “viewed as a strong contender to replace Wilder”.

Before joining Watford in May, Edwards guided Forest Green to the League Two title in the 2021/22 season.

Prior to that he had worked alongside Hornets legend Kenny Jackett at Wolves, and managed non-league Telford United. Edwards also spent time in the England national team set-up, coaching the Under-20s before managing the Under-16s.

The 39-year-old also won 15 full international caps for Wales.
