Oxhey Jets have been handed a trip to Cambridgeshire to face Whittlesey Athletic after reaching the second round of the FA Vase for the first time in three years.

Jets are still seeking their first win in the Combined Counties League following an FA restructure and their squad is also undergoing a rebuild, but they delivered a fine display to defeat Wisbech Town 3-1 on Saturday.

The hosts’ opener came in controversial circumstances as Spencer Bellotti challenged the keeper who spilt the ball. Jack Thompson fired at goal, leading to the home side appealing strongly for a penalty for handball, but Bellotti made no mistake with his follow-up to give his side the lead after 25 minutes.

Jets’ advantage was to last only three minutes though, as Kieran Hamilton went round debutant goalkeeper Lewin Lavin to equalise.

Sean Giordmaina was controversially flagged offside and Thompson was denied by a fine save as Oxhey looked for a second, while their defence held firm against a Wisbech side enjoying more possession as the score remained 1-1 at the break.

Jets lifted their game after the restart and their efforts were rewarded after 68 minutes when a blocked shot was crossed back into the box and Bellotti headed in his second.

The scorer then had to go off through injury but his replacement, Elijah Sawyers, ensured his side would be in the hat for the draw this lunchtime when he bent the ball home on the run to score with his first touch.
