Two league starts, two clean sheets and two victories – it’s been a perfect way for James Morris to announce his arrival into the Watford team.

The 21-year-old left-back caught the eye in yesterday’s win over Blackpool, particularly in the second half when the team shape changed to a flat back four.

On a day when other youngsters grabbed the limelight, his role in another shut-out for the Hornets defence mustn’t be forgotten.

“We can only do our job as defenders, and if we keep a clean sheet, we give ourselves the best chance of winning the game,” he said.

“The clean sheet was massively important: two in a row now, Norwich City away and here today.

“We have another big opportunity at home in front of the fans next Saturday, to get another three points and help us climb the table.”

Morris felt the Hornets gave themselves the platform for victory in a dominant if shot-shy opening 45 minutes

“In the first half, we were probably the better team,” he said.

“It was just that end product, it was that last ball. They tried to disrupt us, and I think in the first half that’s what they did.

“The manager told us to keep doing the same things, keep doing what we’re good at, and I think that’s what showed at the end. We got the end result, got the goals and got the win.”

Like the rest of his teammates, and everyone bar those in one side of the Vicarage Road end, the opening goal from 17-year-old Tobi Adeyemo was a joy to behold.

“It was brilliant,” said Morris.

“I remember just seeing him score, then putting his hands on his head in disbelief. It’s a great feeling to have someone from the Academy come on and score and help us win the game.

“It’s brilliant for him, he’s worked really hard. Scoring in front of that home crowd is amazing for him.

“The boys came on and did brilliantly, and we managed to capitalise and get two goals.”
