Watford’s excellent start to the season has got another victory better after they made it five wins out of five and reached the third round of the Carabao Cup with a 2-0 success over Plymouth Argyle at Vicarage Road.

A positive start by the hosts was rewarded when Argyle keeper Dan Grimshaw let a deft flick from Mileta Rajovic squirm through his grasp in the 17th minute.

However, Grimshaw did his best to atone for that error with several excellent saves, denying Tom Ince, Ken Sema and Rajovic shortly before the Danish striker did score his second to ensure the Hornets’ progress in the competition continued.

Five in a row

Tom Cleverley, as expected, shuffled his pack but the outcome was the same as Watford’s previous games this season – a victory.

You may have to go back to March/April 2020 for the last time the Hornets won five successive matches and even further – the start of the 2018/19 campaign – for the last occasion they began a season with five straight successes in all competitions.

This latest success had an effectively efficient feel to it. Watford never came under any sustained pressure after taking the lead and could, arguably should, have made sure of their place in the third round before they did score a second goal.

What did you make of Watford’s performance?

A close-range brace

Another striker may be expected to join before the transfer window closes on Friday but Mileta Rajovic again served up another reminder of what he does best – score goals.

The Dane gave the Hornets the lead with a lovely deft flick in the first half – aided by a howler from Grimshaw – and showed his strength and awareness to double his tally in the second period, having been denied moments by a superb reaction stop from the keeper.

How do you feel Rajovic performed?

Defensive solidity

Every successful team needs to be strong defensively and Watford’s fifth victory in succession was secured with a third clean sheet.

True, a much-changed Argyle team will not be the toughest test the Hornets face this season but it’s a measure of the home side’s organisation and work ethic across the pitch that Jonathan Bond was barely tested – the visitors hitting the post as a result of a Ryan Andrews error.

How impressed were you by Watford’s defensive display?

Pace and power

Following three appearances off the bench, Kwadwo Baah was rewarded with his first start for Watford and showed his qualities playing in support of Rajovic.

The 21-year-old caught the eye with his dribbling qualities, pace and power, proving a handful to defend against. This led to Wayne Rooney replacing Brendan Galloway with Lewis Gibson on the left side of the Argyle back three for the second half, assuming there was no injury.

Baah continued to combine with Ryan Andrews to positive effect after the break and remained full of running until he made way for Rocco Vata in the 64th minute.

What was your assessment of Baah’s display?

Last-minute shopping

There are only three days left until the transfer window closes and more arrivals at Vicarage Road are expected before then.

A striker – Bournemouth’s Daniel Jebbison’s arrival has still to be confirmed – and another defender are at the top of Cleverley’s list, but would you like to see the Hornets add more options in other areas.

Where would you like to see Watford strengthen before the window shuts?
