Watford Women extended their unbeaten run to seven games with a 0-0 draw away to Ipswich Town this afternoon.
The Hornets kept their fourth consecutive clean sheet in the process, and so nearly took all three points deep into stoppage time when Gemma Davison’s 30-yard free-kick hit the bar.
Early on home keeper Natalia Negri came to her side’s rescue when she got her hands on the ball amid a scramble after a corner, but then at the other end Watford stopper Maria O’Sullivan excelled to deny Shauna Guyatt.
On the half-hour mark Watford were denied what looked a cast-iron penalty when Coral Haines slipped the ball into the box for Ellie Head to run onto.
She nudged it past Megan Wearing who then totally upended her, but nothing was given.
After a goalless first half the home posed the first threat after the break when Natasha Thomas went through on goal but Anne Meiwald denied her with a great tackle.
A couple of minutes later Guyatt worked space for a shot from a tight angle but sent her effort over the top.
In the 73rd minute Davison attempted a curling effort but Negri was well-placed to collect.
Dre Georgiou then came to the rescue in the Watford box, making a well-judged tackle to prevent Guyatt getting her shot away.
Guyatt continued to pose a threat, and with six minutes left she let fly from distance, only to see O’Sullivan take off to tip the effort away.
Five minutes into stoppage time Watford so nearly won the game but Davison’s set-piece shot cannoned back off the bar.
Watford are home next Sunday (October 13) when they host Oxford United at Grosvenor Vale (2pm).
