Leigh Bromby has paid the price for his poor defensive display at Burnley on Tuesday night and has been replaced by skipper Jay DeMerit for this afternoon’s clash with Preston North End at Vicarage Road.

That is one of two changes from the side that lost 3-2, with Tamas Priskin returning for the injured John Eustace, which means the Hornets are likely to go with a 4-4-2 formation with the Hungarian partnering Will Hoskins up front.

Preston also come into the game on the back of a defeat, a 2-0 home reverse against Swansea City, and manager Alan Irvine has opted to make one change from that starting line-up, with Ross Wallace replacing Darren Carter, who drops to the bench.

Watford: Lee; Mariappa, DeMerit, Ward, Sadler; Smith, Williamson, O’Toole, Harley; Hoskins, Priskin. Substitutes: Bromby, Ainsworth, Bangura, Tyler, Henderson.

Preston North End: Lonergan; Jones, Mawene, St Ledger, McEveley; Nicholson, McKenna, Wallace, Sedgwick; Mellor, Brown. Substitutes: Jarrett, Carter, Parkin, Elliott, Neal.
