Mark Ashton has issued the following statement after his resignation today.
Speaking to the club's website Ashton said: “I’m very sad to be leaving Watford Football Club and have nothing but respect for the staff that I leave behind.
“They have made this club very special for me over the last four years or so and for that I thank each and every one of them.
“I believe we have made so many significant strides here at Watford during my time, much of which again goes to the hard work of those people I leave at the club.
“I hope I am able to look back and see a club with a bright future and a very, very exciting young manager at the helm."
Ashton wished the club every success for the future.
