Reigning Watford Player of the Season Tommy Smith was unable to claim the Goal of the Season accolade as well almost a year ago, but could Tamas Priskin be in line to complete the rare double?

Only three previous Watford players – Glyn Hodges, Tommy Mooney and Heidar Helguson – have lifted both awards in the same year, but the Hungarian striker is among the early front-runners in both categories.

More than 500 votes have already been counted, including the away fans who had their say on the coaches to Doncaster on Saturday, but much could rest on who the players support among their peers.

The early indications are that Priskin, who ended his five-game sequence without a goal in Tuesday night’s 2-2 draw with Southampton, faces competition from Smith, Lloyd Doyley and the young triumvirate of Jack Cork, Ross Jenkins and Scott Loach for the players’ prestigious Watford Observer trophy.

Three of the forward’s 13 strikes are also polling strongly for the top goal of the campaign – his two cup efforts against Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, plus his finish against Nottingham Forest.

But this category is shaping up to be an Eastern European-dominated one, as Grzegorz Rasiak is also receiving strong backing for two memorable strikes from the edge of the penalty area – at home to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup and at Charlton Athletic.

There is still time for the picture to change though, as votes are being constantly counted ahead of Tuesday’s midnight deadline.
