WATFORD do not expect to complete the signing of Grzegorz Rasiak due to the striker’s wages despite him offering to take a pay cut.

The Poland international was willing to take a 15 per cent pay cut to stay at Vicarage Road but with him currently earning around £10,000 after tax, it was still deemed to be too much.

Southampton manager Mark Wotte confirmed Rasiak has asked to leave the club following their relegation to League One and the club’s holding company going into administration.

But fellow Championship side Sheffield Wednesday have also reportedly pulled out of the race for the 30 year old due to his high wages so there is still a chance of Watford renegotiating.

We understand Rasiak is also reluctant to take his children out of their school in Southampton.

Brendan Rodgers was keen to retain the services of the former Tottenham man after the Northern Irishman admitted changing his opinion on the striker, who scored ten goals in 14 starts in all competitions this season.

Rodgers said: “There has been contact between the clubs. It is something which could prove difficult because of the wages but there are negotiations and the club are speaking with his agent.

“But because of the climate we are in, it is looking to be difficult.

“I think it is a shame because his contribution has been good for us but it is likely to be his last big contract so he needs to maximise it for his family and we do not have the finances to compete.

“He loved the club and everything about it but salary is important for players and we cannot match it so if he can get it elsewhere then fine.

“He was willing to take a cut on what he was on but even with the cut of 15 per cent it still puts him on quite a bit of money.”
