Nathan Ellington hopes the goals will start "flooding in" after scoring his first for Watford in 18 months on Tuesday.

Ellington had not netted in Watford colours since the 2-1 victory over Coventry City in April 2008 going into the mid-week match at Portman Road, but as Ipswich looked set to win for the first time this season, the striker popped up in the 94th minute to volley in the equaliser.

The 28-year-old had not found the net in nine previous appearances this campaign, although most were from the bench, but his manager Malky Mackay and team-mates have constantly backed the former Wigan Athletic hitman to come good.

Ellington said: "Everybody has been saying to me that once I get one, they should all come flooding in as I have been unlucky not to score more already.

"But the more goals I score, the more confidence I will gain. Now instead of thinking when will I get that goal, I will be thinking about getting more and more goals."

Watford's financial situation has dramatically changed since Ellington arrived in the summer of 2007 and as one of the club's highest earners, he has openly admitted that it is best for all parties if he leaves the club "pretty soon".

But both he and Mackay have stated they are happy for the striker to remain a key member of the first-team squad until that happens.

With on-loan QPR striker Heidar Helguson out injured, fans have had glimpses of top-scorer Danny Graham and Ellington up front together and Ellington believes the pair work well, as they did for Watford's equaliser on Tuesday.

He said: "Every time I come on, me and Danny have linked up well and see what each other are going to do. I enjoy playing with him and he enjoys playing with me.

"I have been playing well with him in training, you may not have seen it so much in games, but I am confident we can link up well together, as can all our strikers."

Former Watford manager Brendan Rodgers claimed Ellington's Watford career was over towards the end of last season, despite the striker's permanent move to Derby County falling through.

But when Rodgers left to join Reading, his replacement Mackay included Ellington as part of his pre-season trip to Spain and the Hornets boss has been delighted with the former West Bromwich Albion man’s contribution.

Speaking after Ellington netted the equaliser on Tuesday, Mackay said: "That is what I see in training and he is getting himself into positions in every game he has come on – he has had at least a couple of shots at goal, made the keepers make saves and has hit the post and the bar and has shown work rate as well and that is why I have been impressed by him since minute one of pre-season.

"He has shown an attitude and an application to go out there and be the best that he can be and go out there and actually improve us as a team and try to score goals."
