Rubbish is piling up at Hertfordshire recycling centres as there are not enough drivers to remove it.

Hertfordshire County Council warned residents over the weekend that it could not empty the recycling containers as quickly as usual due to an “unexpected shortage of haulage drivers”.

Residents may not be able to dump certain items, a spokesperson said, adding: "We know this is frustrating, but please bear with us and be kind to the on-site staff who are working very hard to resolve this.”

At the Waterdale facility in St Albans Road, Garston, six containers for wood, mixed recycling, garden waste, paper, plasterboard and non-recyclable rubbish are all full today, according to the county council website.

A further seven are nearly full while only the containers for textiles and fridges/freezer are listed as “available”.

At the Rickmansworth recycling centre in Riverside Drive, residents cannot dispose of wood, scrap metal, cardboard, textiles, and large domestic appliances as the bins are full.

Information on what can be dumped, as well as opening hours and a queue camera are available on the county council website.
