After featuring in the Watford Observer in 1986 as a budding filmmaker, Mark Scruton has won an Emmy for Netflix series Wednesday.
On Saturday (January 6), the Creative Arts Emmy for 'Outstanding Production Design for A Narrative Contemporary Program (One Hour Or More)' for 2023 was presented to production designer Mark Scruton, art director Adrian Curelea, and set director Robert Hepburn.
The trio worked on Wednesday, starring Jenna Ortega, and won the top award for the first episode, titled Wednesday’s Child Is Full of Woe.

Watford’s Mark Scruton described the win as fulfilling a “lifetime goal”.
Mark, who now lives in Kings Langley with his wife and son, had been spotted as a cinematic talent back in March 21 1986 when the Watford Observer ran a story headlined ‘Mark’s in on the action’. The then-10-year-old had just demonstrated his skills at Watford Cine Society’s annual film show.
The article said: “Spielberg may have picked up the BAFTA award this year for his film directing but Mark Scruton has plenty of time to pick one up in the future.”
Now in Dublin working on another big-name production, the 48-year-old added: “I was obviously really interested in making films since I was about five.
“My parents found an advert, probably in the Watford Observer, for the Watford Cine society and my dad took me along and I was a member for many years.”
He added that he is still in touch with some of his fellow society members in the town and described going there as “a great springboard” for his later career.
The 2023 Primetime Emmy Awards were delayed for four months due to Hollywood strikes. They are the top TV awards for the American television industry and are presented over three nights.
The Creative Arts Emmys were given out at ceremonies on January 6 and 7, to recognise artistic and technical achievements in TV.
The final ceremony will be on January 15 and feature categories such as Outstanding Comedy/Drama series and Outstanding Lead Actor/Actress, as well as writing and directing awards.
