Haringey’s junior fencers produced a golden moment as they won the event in the London Youth Games.

After being eliminated at the quarter-final stage last year, it was a massive improvement from the borough as their squad turned in performances of the highest quality.

The team – consisting of Matthew Abrahams, brother and sister Alessandro and Isabella Gill, Max Stepinac and Max Thomas – came through their group undefeated after beating Hillingdon, Croydon and Camden.

Haringey were drawn to face Camden again in the quarter-finals and in a close-fought encounter triumphed 41-37 before beating Ealing in the semis in another tight match 41-38.

In the final, they faced Barnet and the team saved their best for last as Haringey won 45-21 to take home the gold medal.

“We are ecstatic of course. We did come with good hopes but we didn’t think we’d get this far,” said head coach Marinko Stepinac.

“They’ve done a fair amount of training because they are from a couple of the top foil clubs and they get a good standard of coaching and a good level of competitive competition. So some of them are training up to three or four times a week.”

The fencing was held at Redbridge Sports Centre, a venue which also hosted qualifying for the hockey and badminton which both featured Haringey.

Both the male and female hockey teams made it through to the finals at the National Sports Centre next month.

The boys came through their qualifying undefeated, a campaign which also included a 4-0 win ove reigning London Youth Games champions Redbridge.

Like the boys, the girls came through undefeated and beat last year’s silver medallists Bexley 3-1 in the process.

The badminton team followed suit and came through qualifying without even dropping a game.

Manager Judith Pedersen said: “Everyone played well and no one lost a match, we are quite strong in all our disciplines.

“We had quite a friendly draw and I expected our team to progress.”
