There have been renewed calls to secure the site of the former Bill Everett Centre after travellers left mountains of rubbish at the scene.

Pictures taken over the weekend reveal the huge piles of waste which have built up at the Leggatts Way site since travellers broke in last week.

It is understood that Hertfordshire County Council, which owns the land, has now requested an eviction order to remove the travellers from the premises.

Hertfordshire County Council said it would “reinstate appropriate security measures” once the travellers had been removed and work with additional unspecified agencies to “determine what further actions we can take to prevent any re-occurrence”.

However Watford borough councillor Asif Khan has urged the county council to spend a suitable sum to properly secure the site once the travellers have been evicted.

Concrete-filled barrels were placed in front of the gates to the vacant plot by the council in an attempt to stave off roving travellers but they proved insufficient.

“I said in January that the concrete barrels were not good enough and that they were an eye-sore,” said Cllr Khan.

“This was totally avoidable. The site is not secure – they now need to ensure it is. By spending a little bit of money they will save a lot in the long run.

“It is not acceptable for local people to face this type of rubbish on their doorstep.”

Cllr Khan has started a petition calling on the council to install a “proper, permanent barrier” at the entrance to the site. You can sign it here.
