A HOME is needed for four friendly black and white speckled cockerels who have been dumped in London Colney.

As we revealed on this website last week, the birds were found in Telford Road on Thursday morning, and so far no-one has come forward to claim them.

It is thought that they were originally left in the playing fields surrounding Bowmansgreen School, the emblem of which is a cockerel, and then flew out over a hedge.

They have since taken up residence in the front garden of one of the houses in Telford Road, adjacent to the school, and people are giving them water and seeds to eat.

Linda Gibling from London Colney Parish Council said she had contacted the police, the RSPCA and Willows Farm, but that it was proving difficult to find a home for the foursome.

She said: "I spoke to Liz Jakeman, the animal warden at St Albans District Council, and she said that if nobody took them she would start asking around. I would have thought it would be the noise that would put people off, but it's not that bad really. No-one has complained about it; it sounds quite cheery.

"They're not afraid of people, they're just living their life as celebrities now and strutting out to see the people that come to see them."

Telford Road resident Ted Turner, who lives three doors down from where the cockerels have made their home, said: "Somebody from the RSPCA came down and said they could pick them up but they didn't know what they would do with them.

"They've really made themselves at home. At night they all sit along one of the walls between the gardens so that they're hidden by the shrubs."
