THE millionaire MP and former chairman of Luton Football Club, David Evans, has died.

David, who lived in Wheathampstead where he was a parish councillor more than 20 years ago, died on Tuesday aged 73.

The politician was the Welwyn Hatfield Conservative MP for a decade until 1997 and recognised as one of the most opinionated and colourful MPs in the House of Commons.

He made his millions from a cleaning company he set up with his wife.

Aside from politics, David is also remembered for overseeing arguably the most successful period in Luton Town Football Club’s history as chairman between 1984 and 1989, which included a win over Arsenal in the 1988 Littlewoods Cup Final.

But he was also behind the controversial move to ban away fans from the stadium and on his departure demanded his investment money back, forcing the ground into the hands of Luton Borough Council.

David leaves behind wife Janice and their two sons and one daughter.
