Three Enfield students hooked on fishing snagged an angling title at the 2012 London Youth Games to leave last year’s winners reeling.

Conrad Wanderski, Matt Oliver and Charly Cooper all came in the top two of their competitions to beat champions Croydon by just four points.

The win means the Enfield team regains the title it has won three times in the last four years at the competition, which involves 71,000 young people representing their borough in once of 30 different sports.

The fishing teams consist of two senior anglers aged 18 or younger and one junior angler aged 15 or younger.

Each fisherman gains points accumulated from the weight of the fish caught and these points are combined to give a team score.

Conrad achieved top results in his Senior A category as he reeled in a 36lbs 2oz fish, and Oliver came second to Croydon in the Senior B competition – despite catching a fish over 62lbs.

Junior Charly also came second place in his division, gaining the biggest catch of the group at 70lbs.

Team manager Carl Whitman said: “It’s been a great day and brilliant to win because I didn’t expect us to do that well.

“I fished at the London Youth Games when I was young and to be a part of it is brilliant, it was massive when I was doing it. We had a really good team when I was younger but there were a few years when Enfield didn’t have a team, so seeing the look on their faces when they won really meant a lot.”

Whitman also praised Conrad, who was a last-minute replacement in the competition.

He said: “We had one new angler in Conrad who was a complete novice with us and fished a blinder at short notice. This is his first year fishing and he has only done it a few times with his mates before.

"We gave him a bit of advice before the start and he has fished really well. He kept in control, won his section and ultimately contributed massively towards us winning overall.”
