St Albans Ladies were defeated in the semi-final of the St Albans & District Ladies’ BA Double Rink competition.

Despite having a good start, St Albans eventually lost to Hatfield Bowling Club 21-12 in an extra-end contest.

The ladies’ district triples league match against Harpenden, which had previously been abandoned because of heavy rain last month, was resumed with the two teams finishing with a draw, resulting in them collecting three points each.

In the district triples league, Shire Park gained all six points after beating St Albans ladies. This ended their chance of winning the competition for the third year in a row.

St Albans men also lost their last match against North Mymms by 91 points to 61. North Mymms claimed 65 whilst St Albans had to be consoled with 15. The top rink for St Albans in this contest was Phil McArthur, Tom Banfield, Robin Farrer and Tony Rylands (22-18).

St Albans did come close against De Havillands losing by nine shots in a three rink triples match before being beaten by Tring 96-64.

The side couldn’t quite get the better of Harpenden losing 53-50 in a tight contest. The top rink for St Albans in this event was Maggie Kendrick, Maureen Grimward, Marjorie Knight and skip Jill Morris (23-14).

The St Albans & District Ladies’ Bowling Association recently played the men from Oakhill Bowls Club narrowly losing 78-72.

There are 17 bowls clubs in the St Albans area affiliated to the St Albans & District Ladies’ Bowling Association. 

Townsend Bowls Club reached two finals after wins for Jeff Harber and Mike Cowell.

In the district triples semi finals, Townsend defeated Harpenden by an aggregate score of four shots, winning at home by ten and going down away by only six.

The home trio were Robbie Ransted, Harber and Cowell and the away team were Andy Bates, Mike Doherty and Gordon Williamson.

The second victory came in the semi final of the Bob Vise Trophy where Hatfield were the opposition.

Townsend won in three of the four disciplines, with the headline scores being achieved by the four of Mike Haslam, Cowell, Harber and Peter Armstrong and Dave Houghton in the singles, who defeated Don Knight 21-10.

Townsend had their midweek away match at Cambridge Chesterton, and managed to record a 5-1 victory over their hosts.

The individual rink results were very close but the team skipped by Cowell, with the 93-year-old Norman McGlynn at lead, Ron Seymour and Jean Marriott were declared the top rink.
