A fundraiser who collected more than £100,000 for charities over her lifetime has died, aged 74.

Rose Taylor, of Bagley Wood Road, Kennington, ran coffee mornings, opened her gardens to the public and organised Christmas dinners for pensioners in the village.

More than 40 different charities benefited from her hard work, including the Oxford Children's Hospital Campaign, Helen House hospice and the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford, as well as the Abbey Centre and Kingfisher School in Abingdon.

She also worked as a volunteer helper with special needs children at St Swithun's Primary School in Kennington for more than a decade.

Five years ago, Mrs Taylor was named a Local Hero by Fox FM.

She played down her efforts when she was interviewed about the thousands of pounds she had raised over the years and said it had been instilled in her when she was brought up in a convent.

She said: "My family has always done charity work, so really it is nothing special. It's a way of life for us."

Born in Cobh, in southern Ireland, Mrs Taylor arrived in England in 1946 when her father came to Oxfordshire for work.

She met her husband Tony a year later, and they married in 1954.

Her son David, 49, said: "She was a lovely lady. She got on with everyone and that was proven by the funeral service. When we held it we couldn't get everyone in the church."

Mrs Taylor leaves her husband, two children, five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
