Quique Sanchez Flores insists he isn’t concerned Troy Deeney and Odion Ighalo have scored 14 of Watford’s 17 Premier League goals because all his players are creating chances.

The pair were at it again this afternoon as the Hornets beat Norwich City 2-0 to move into ninth place.

Ighalo won a first-half penalty which Deeney stroked beyond Declan Rudd before Deeney supplied the lofted pass from which Ighalo wrapped up the game late on.

Only Almen Abdi, the departed Miguel Layun and Aston Villa’s Alan Hutton – in the form of an own goal – have also found the net for the Hornets.

But the Spaniard is not concerned as long as his players continue to create opportunities.

He said: “I’m not worried. I would be worried if we didn’t create chances, put in crosses or if we were playing very far away from the opponent’s box. This is not the case.

“The statistics reflect the match. My feeling is that we create different situations and when the match finishes I have the statistics which say Ighalo and Deeney have maybe three or four shots, Etienne Capoue has one, Abdi and Jose Manuel Jurado have two.”

The Hornets had plenty of chances against the Canaries but it was not until Ighalo grabbed a second – and his ninth of the season – that Watford were home and dry.

Flores was impressed by the way his side adapted to Norwich and coped with strong winds to overcome Alex Neil’s newly-promoted side.

“I think it was a very difficult win for us,” he admitted. “Norwich started the match well and we had to stop them.

“We had to read the game well because Norwich played well in the opening 15 minutes. We tried to create a balance between attack and defence. Step-by-step, little-by-little we began to play a little bit better.

“The conditions were very difficult for both teams with the wind because the players needed to calculate the direction of the ball.

“But finally we started to play well and passed the ball through the central midfielders, Etienne Capoue and Ben Watson. After the penalty, I thought it was a little bit better.”

Watford’s biggest scare came when Chelsea loanee Nathan Ake collided with Andre Wisdom in the air, an incident which saw the Dutchman require several minutes of treatment before continuing.

“He’s good,” said Flores when asked how the left-back was. “He’s young, strong. There’s no problem.

“We are very happy with the performance of Ake. He’s a very good man and a very good player.”

Flores made two changes from the side which won 3-2 at Aston Villa last weekend, one of which was to restore Jose Manuel Jurado to the starting XI in place of Abdi.

“Jurado played because he played in the first quarter of the league,” Flores explained. “He’s recuperated. Abdi didn’t train with us yesterday.

“If a player has a problem he won’t play because we need players who are 100 per cent.

“But we are happy because we have cover in this position. We have Jurado, Anya, Abdi, Paredes, Guedioura is coming and he can play like he did for 20 minutes against Aston Villa and more in the future.

“At the moment we have cover for this position and that is very important because that cover is creating competition for places.”
