Reading confirm signing of Adrian Mariappa

Reading have confirmed the signing of Watford vice-captain Adrian Mariappa on a three-year contract.

The Hornets have described the transfer sum as "a significant undisclosed fee" but the Watford Observer understands the initial figure is in excess of £2m and could rise to more than £2.5m.

Mariappa completed his medical on Friday and the Royals were keen to confirm the signing before they left for Portugal tomorrow.

The Harrow-born defender is a graduate of Watford’s academy and has made 247 appearances for the club since his debut in 2005.

The father-of-three has been a mainstay of the Hornets side in recent years and has excelled in his favoured position of centre half.

The 25-year-old was the clear winner of both the Watford Observer Player of the Season Trophy and the Players’ Player of the Year crown and his displays attracted the interest of a host of Premier League clubs.

Newcastle United and Wigan Athletic bid for the defender in January and Swansea City also enquired about the centre back at the beginning of the season, but were put off by the club’s asking price.

Reading had a £2m bid for Mariappa rejected before the club's takeover last month but their second offer was accepted by the Pozzos.

fair point, I guess I'd just like our own paper to report these things BEFORE Sky, ESPN etc, or at least use this news item to add some more updates re: Hall, Inzaghi, Gabbidon, Cudicini etc. As it is they have just read the Reading website and repeated it.

It's possible that I'm being unreasonable, however.

But to their credit the wobby don't report rumours, unless they have some merit. They tend to stick to the facts and if they don't have them they don't report them. Long may that continue.

Have to laugh at your comment Colin West Mullet. It shows you know very little about the journalism industry. You moan about the WO not reporting on things properley and then list Fitz Hall when it was the WO who broke that story. And you moan about the article rehashing the Reading site when they reveal the transfer fee, despite it only being completed this afternoon? You then list players who have been linked with the club but there are two or three new ones every day. Half of which are not true. So on one hand you want the WO to print original articles based on facts and then in the same comment ask them to repeat the rubbish on rumour sites?

I'll probably get a few pelters for this, but here goes! I think Mapps will struggle in the premiership... don't get me wrong, great player for us, came through the youth team, broke into the first team and thoroughly deserved POTS last season. But with a club like Reading, there's no solid defensive base to start from! He's going to a club that on paper looks like it will really struggle to me and Mapps has in the past had a tendency to lose concentration at times... in the Prem, he will get punished for that! I think the move to Newcastle back in January looked far better for him as a player, but the Geordies didn't want to be held to ransom, and i understand that.

I think he will need someone better beside him that Pearce or Gorkss... alot better!

But good luck to you anyway Mapps, prove me wrong!

He will do fine in the prem as he's a class player! The only time he has had problems have been when that idiot Loach has caused them! As Reading have a proper Keeper can't see any problems.

The WO reported on Friday morning that Mariappa was set to leave and were the first to name a figure then. This morning they then reported the move would be concluded today so the next upload was confirmation, which comes once it is announced. I'm really struggling to understand the criticism. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the WO is perfect by any stretch of the imagination but I feel your criticism is unjustified in this case as I think they covered the Mariappa transfer excellently. I for one appreciate the fact WO don't just repeat all the speculation as it increases their credibility. I'm sure they miss out on thousands of cheap hits a week by not repeating the links with people like Nesta, Del Piero etc

you're arguing with someone who's heart isn't in it.

As I said (at the top of this page) when first challenged - it's possible I'm being unreasonable.

Fair play to you for admitting as much. I respect you for that. Let's hope we see some decent football tonight. As Zola said, I guess the result isn't important. It is more about seeing evidence of the work on the training ground.
