Environmental campaigners are urging everyone to get involved in a week of free activities including walks, litter picks, talks and movies across the seven days this month.

Groups in Three Rivers and Watford are set to take part in this nationwide campaign to highlight the need for urgent action on the climate and nature ahead of COP26, the United Nations Climate talks, later this year in Glasgow.

Taking place between September 18 and 26, the climate action campaign week known as the Great Big Green Week will see people across the UK organising local festivals and events.

To kick off the week, on September 18 is Cycle the Watford Green Ring, a cycle ride around the 7-mile Green Ring route starting at 10am. All ages welcome.

At 1.30pm on the same day will be a film screening of The Lorax at Watersmeet Theatre, an event venue in High Street, Rickmansworth - booking is required.

Another screening will be on Tuesday 21 also at Watersmeet Theatre of David Attenborough’s A Life On Our Planet, starting at 7pm.

Many more activities and events can be found on the Great Big Green Week’s event booklet on the website linked below.

The campaign aims to draw attention to climate change and destruction of the natural world, while making a connection with these issues in communities like Three Rivers and Watford and how people can tackle it.

The Three Rivers and Watford week is being co-ordinated by Watford and Three Rivers Friends of the Earth.

The events will be hosted by organisations such as Watford Council, Three Rivers District Council, Veolia, Affinity, Watford and Three Rivers Friends of the Earth, Sustainable Three Rivers, Spokes, Random Café, Croxley Common Moor, among others.

Anna Addison from Watford and Three Rivers Friends of the Earth said: “I want to see our community come together to make progress on tackling climate change because I care about my local area and can see the impact the changing climate is already having and think we need to do all we can to protect the planet for generations to come.”

Cllr Ian Stotesbury, who is responsible for transport and sustainability at Watford Borough Council, said: "Great Big Green Week is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the huge and growing range of local sustainable groups, shops, charities and activities.

“We must come together to learn to tackle climate change - and in doing so make our lives more active, healthy and sustainable.

“Thanks to everyone getting involved this year - we hope to grow this year on year!"
