Atria Watford has remained tight-lipped after Home Bargains revealed it was “definitely interested” in opening a branch in the town.

Residents reacted with delight on social media after the popular discount store told shoppers to “watch this space” earlier this week.

Speculation was rife over where it could potentially open – with several contributors highlighting the vacant John Lewis unit as an option.

The Watford Observer asked Atria whether it is now actively trying to add Home Bargains to its offering, and whether the John Lewis site is being considered.

A spokesperson responded: “We are seeing significant demand for space at Atria Watford from exciting new names, but we don’t ever comment on speculation regarding potential new tenants.”

Watford BID was also approached, but chief executive Maria Manion voiced doubts over whether there were adequately-sized units available outside of Atria.

She explained that Home Bargains likes to be in warehouses or very large units, and though some branches are in slightly smaller sites, she does not think there is availability here.

The business has over 500 outlets UK-wide and was among Watford Observer readers’ most common answers when naming one shop the town really needs.
