A hugely popular fair has been told it cannot use Cassiobury Park this spring – and going forwards will only be allowed there every other year.

Stevens Fun Fair, a local fixture which attracts thousands of people, has been offered different locations in Watford following noise complaints, according to the organisers.

Charmaine Stevens said they are “devastated” over the borough council’s decision after 70 years of annual events at the park.

“We are all devastated because I can remember all my life I have been going to Watford every year," she said.

“We know so many people in Watford and they come and say how nice it is.

“We have so much history in Watford.”

She fears other venues are not as suitable and may prevent them putting on the same level of event.

Ms Stevens said she understands noise cannot be totally avoided but the hours have been reduced to 1pm-9pm and a decibel monitoring device is used.

She added consideration should also be given to residents who are not lucky enough to live so close to “beautiful” Cassiobury Park.

“We think our presence in the park also enhances and encourages more people to visit the cafeteria, pool and other local council attractions in Cassiobury Park.

“The feedback on our Facebook page last year was overwhelming with compliments and thank you posts from Watford residents.”

This year’s event was set to be an “extra special” 10-day visit coinciding with the Queen’s Jubilee celebrations.

Borough councillor Tim Williams said: “Each year we have a large number of requests to hire the park and whilst we try to find room for as many as possible, we do have to take into account the impact on the park’s natural environment and on the surrounding residential areas.

“We also have to make sure we give new businesses and organisations the opportunity to hire the park.”

He added: “We advised Stevens Fun Fair last July that they could hire Cassiobury every other year.

“We have also offered them any of our other parks for the years when they can’t be in Cassiobury so they can still bring the fair to Watford and hope that this offer is taken up.”
