Shoppers claim a CCTV "blind spot" in Watford's Primark is being exploited by pickpockets as it prevents police investigating.

The retailer has come under fire after three mums shared stories of their belongings being stolen while in the store.

Among them was a woman who recently claimed her phone was stolen out of her pocket while she was with her baby.

She said: “Security and police did nothing, but since speaking to everyone, apparently it’s become huge and very common.”

A social media post sparked numerous similar responses.

Another mum wrote: “My phone was stolen from underneath my pram in Watford Primark today!

“Security claimed they can’t see anything as the cameras wasn’t facing us so said they can’t do anything.”

Someone else said: “I had my whole bag stolen out of my child’s pushchair, which was hidden, in Primark 18 months ago.

“Turns out they have a CCTV black spot that pickpockets know about. Security and police did nothing.”

A Primark spokesperson said: "We work really hard to make our stores are safe and enjoyable places to shop.

"We take all reports of theft very seriously and will always thoroughly investigate each one in collaboration with the relevant authorities.

"We encourage any customers who believe they have been a victim of crime to speak to a manager in-store.”

Others also claimed they have been targeted in other parts of Watford town centre too.

One said: “My very elderly mother had just been to the bank to draw out £1,000 and the money was stolen from out of her bag, this was in town a few years back and the police didn’t seem very interested.”

Another said: “My bike was stolen, and they said that none of the CCTV got it on film despite it being in the middle of the high street. I don't think they even looked.”

A Hertfordshire Constabulary spokesperson said: “Town centres have a higher footfall so naturally can attract opportunist thieves; however we’ve not noticed a particular spate of thefts at this time.

“We conduct regular patrols in the town centre and work closely with local businesses and retailers to identify any emerging patterns or hotspots, and regularly run plain-clothes operations in the town centre specifically targeting purse-dippers.”
