Free performing arts classes are available to children who will have the opportunity to work with a dancer who has featured on Strictly Come Dancing.

Over the half term, from October 24 to 28, children between the ages of eight and 16 can experience expert teaching from industry professionals.

Classes will be held from 9.30am to 3pm at the Meriden Community Centre and will cover a variety of skills including dance lessons, script work, vocal coaching and circus skills.

The performing arts week is being organised by Andre Best who runs the charity You Matter, based in the Meriden.

As well as being a charity shop, You Matter is an organisation that provides education and training support to help people learn employability skills, earn a sustainable income and become self-sufficient.

Ms Best said: “We wanted to give our young people an opportunity to experience a performing arts week.

“It’s costly going to stage schools and this is free.

“There are lots of children who enjoy singing and dancing but can’t afford to attend stage school.”

One of the teachers is Briony Albert who has danced for superstars including Pharrell, Kylie Minogue, Celine Dion and Snoop Dogg.

She has also worked on TV shows such as Strictly Come Dancing, The Voice and Dancing on Ice.

Ms Best said: “Briony has worked with some of the best.

“She is a choreographer and is bringing some actors from London to work with the children.

“It will be a real performing arts week.”

At the end of the week’s training, children will be able to show their new-found skills to family and friends in a showcase.

Ms Best said: “This week is about building children’s self-confidence.

“After lockdown, children have really suffered with their mental health.

“We are hoping this week will help them to rebuild their confidence.

“They don’t have to be great and singing and dancing, it is all about having the experience – a once in a lifetime opportunity to work with leading professionals.”

There are 35 spaces available for the week for children from Watford and lunch will be provided.

For a child to be accepted, parents have been asked to send a video or provide a written message from their child explaining why they would like to attend the programme.

To send the video, message or to ask for more information, email events@youmatterwatford.org.uk.
