A cash prize of £500 is up for grabs in a classical music competition for young people.

On March 18, the Rickmansworth Young Musician of the Year final will be held at the Reach Free School at 2pm.

Adult tickets cost £10 in advance or £12 on the door. Tickets for under 19s cost £5.

Judges have whittled 23 entrants down to eight finalists who will perform two classical pieces each on the day.

Alan Baskeyfield, who is a joint organiser of the event, which is being ran by Chorleywood Music, said: “We have an extremely high standard of talent this year, as we do every year.”

Mr Baskeyfield said: “When you hear them play it is moving and spectacular.

“They play with a lot of force.”

A total of £500 will be awarded to the winner, second place will receive £250 and third place will be given £125.

The event, which has been held annually since 1983, will also have a special visit from last year’s winner, Sofiia Matviienko from Ukraine who played the flute.

She will also present this year’s prizes.
