It is more than 45 years since the last episode of Z Cars was broadcast on our TV screens but it remains part of every Watford fan’s life as it continues to provide the theme to welcome the players on the pitch before every game at Vicarage Road.
Back in August 1963 though, regulars of the former Happy Hour, in Eastbury Road, welcomed stars of the famous police drama series to their pub.
A Watford Observer photographer snapped Stratford Johns and Frank Windsor, who played Detective Inspector Barlow and Detective Sargent Watt, joking with staff and customers as they emptied the contents of a large money collection jar.
Based on the work of mobile uniformed police in the fictional town of Newtown, Z Cars was launched in January 1962 and ran for a total of 801 episodes until September 1978, although the original run ended in 1965.
