A popular Rickmansworth park is not usually where you would expect to see a group of men dressed up as eskimos on a spring day but that was what happened when a much-loved comedy trio came to town.

These pictures from the Watford Observer archive were taken in April 1976 and show ‘The Goodies’ filming by the lakes at Rickmansworth Aquadrome.

The comedy series starring Tim Brooke-Taylor, Graeme Garden and Bill Oddie ran from 1970 to 1982 and was watched by 15 million people at the height of its popularity.

Our photographer captured Brooke-Taylor, wearing an impressive Union flag hat, and Garden keeping their feet firmly on dry land while the eskimos took to the water to fish.

A search online reveals the filming was likely taking place for an episode called ‘Lips, or Almighty Cod’ that was aired in September 1976.

This was based on a fictional scarcity of cod that left ‘The Goodies’ with nothing to make fish fingers from. However, the trio poached one and raised it to become a giant.
