Calls have been made for the return of a Watford town centre Wetherspoon pub after its replacement shut within months of opening.

The Watford Observer asked punters what it would like to see replace Jardin, with the unit now back on the market, with the Colombia Press among the top responses after it shut for "commercial reasons" in 2023.

One commenter wrote: "I would like to see it be replaced with Colombia Press again! I liked that spoons."

"We need more affordable nights out," he added, while another claimed the pub would make "a fortune" if it returned to The Parade.

Wetherspoon, which owns the building and is headquartered in Watford, also operates The Moon Under Water pub in High Street.

Other suggestions for the unit included a range of cuisines, including Chinese and Thai food, along with an independent retailer.

Also floated was the idea of a German-themed venue with "proper imported German beer", authentic food and the screening of live Bundesliga football.

Other more nostalgic pining included calls for the return of The Chicago Rock Cafe and Bar Risa.

Mexican bar and restaurant Jardin opened in July 2024 serving authentic Mexican dishes and mezcal cocktails.

However, it shut in February last year as the owner said maintenance was required for the heating system because it was causing repeat issues.

It was initially expected to reopen in March before this was pushed back to late May, but it ultimately never started serving customers again and the unit remains closed.

JD Wetherspoon still owns the unit and is marketing it through real estate company CBRE.

“The former Colombia Press occupies a prime pitch in the pedestrianised town centre,” a brochure says.

The rateable value is £120,000 and the licensed opening hours are until midnight Tuesday and Wednesday, 2am Thursday to Saturday and Monday, and midnight on Sunday.

Pricing will be provided on application, it adds.

Wetherspoon has been contacted for comment.
