A village carnival's dog show has been cancelled due the extreme heat.

The event runs as part of Kings Langley Carnival, which is happening this Saturday (June 27) on Kings Langley Common from 12pm to 5pm.

It has been called off by Forever Hounds Trust, which runs the show, for the safety of the pets.

A social media post read: "Unfortunately, due to the increased temperature forecast for Saturday, the committee and Forever Hounds have taken the decision that the safest thing for our furry friends is NOT to run the dog show this year.

"They hope to be back next year (for the carnival's 70th birthday, let's hope that we have slightly cooler weather then!)"

Watford bakes during week of red and amber heat warnings

A spokesperson has confirmed to the Watford Observer that the carnival is still going ahead, advising visitors to wear sun cream, a hat and carry water.

It comes as Hertfordshire is currently under a red warning for extreme heat, now extended by the Met Office until 9pm Friday.

Temperatures this week have reached the mid-30s and are forecast to hit 36C tomorrow before lowering to 30C on Saturday.

As a result, a number of schools have changed their timetables with Westfield Academy shutting early at 1.20pm yesterday, today and tomorrow for all students.

Likewise, Watford Grammar School have also closed at 2.50pm on Tuesday, yesterday and today for years seven to ten.
