Victorian Christmas traditions will come to life at a special museum event this November.

The Museum of Watford is hosting a free family-friendly event, Christmas with the Victorians, at The Hub in Cassiobury Park on November 28, from 11am to 3pm.

The event will explore the origins of many festive customs that began in the Victorian era and remain popular today, offering visitors a chance to learn through crafts, historical displays, and traditional parlour games.

Mayor of Watford, Peter Taylor, said: "Christmas with the Victorians offers a fun and interactive way for people to explore local and national history. Visitors can enjoy traditional festive activities while learning about the realities of life during the Victorian era, from the traditions that shaped Christmas as we know it today to the wider social issues that influenced everyday life."

The event will also explore broader themes of Victorian life, including social inequality and the impact of the British Empire on England. It is part of the museum’s outreach programme, designed to bring heritage and history into community spaces.

A spokesperson for the Museum of Watford said the outreach programme aims to make collections and stories more accessible to residents of all ages.
