A prominent Watford pub is closed from today (November 3) for a refurbishment.

O'Neill's, next to Watford Junction in Station Road, will be out of action for a little more than two weeks before reopening on Thursday, November 19.

It comes amid an ongoing closure of its car park for resurfacing work. It has been shut since October 19 and will reopen on November 20, one day after the pub itself.

O’Neill’s has a Tripadvisor rating of 4.2 from 245 reviews. Its building dates back to 1860 and was formerly known as The Flag before becoming O’Neill’s in 2019.

While an "internal scheme of refurbishment" is going ahead, Watford Borough Council refused planning permission for external changes to the Grade II-listed building.

These were planned alongside the wider refurbishment, but council officers said they would “appear dominant and create visual clutter in the street-scene and would be unduly harmful to the visual amenity of the area and the listed building”.

Mitchells & Butlers operates more than 40 O'Neill's locations across the UK, with its website saying: "At our pubs the good times flow as freely as the drinks.

"We offer a high street haven where you can enjoy a big night, a big match or a big feast - whether you fancy a few rounds, a spot of lunch or a breakfast of champions."
