It's a drizzly afternoon in early autumn and Watford boy-done-good Shahid Khan - aka superstar music producer Naughty Boy - is standing in the car park of the King George V Playing Fields.

No, he’s not just in town to pay a visit to his mum who lives just round the corner, but to film a trailer for this year’s MOBO Awards, at which he will be performing.

The film crew turn up and begin preparing for the shoot, but Shahid ushers me into his sister’s car for a quick chat before filming gets under way.

“They wanted me to go back to my roots and this is the park I used to play in all the time as a kid,” explains the award-winning producer, who released his new single Runnin’ (Lose It All) featuring Beyoncé and Arrow Benjamin last week. “There used to be a tennis court so we used to pretend like we could play tennis,” he smiles. “It is nice to be here but I wish the weather was better. When it is hot in this part of Watford it is just the best place.”

The trailer will run on ITV ahead of this year’s MOBOs in Leeds, an awards night that brings back fond memories for Shahid as he scooped Best Song and Best Video for hit record La La La, featuring Sam Smith, at the 2013 ceremony.

“This is just about inspiring people, it doesn’t matter where you come from, it is about what we achieve,” reflects the 30-year-old, who started out making music from his parents’ shed.

Nine years ago he was delivering pizzas and dreaming of forging a career in music. He’d dropped out of London Guildhall University and was back living in Watford with his mum and dad.

Fast forward to 2015 and things are very different for Shahid, who now has two Ivor Novello awards under his belt, a BRIT Award nomination, was behind Emeli Sandé’s chart-topping album Our Version of Events, is credited with discovering singer Sam Smith, and had his 2013 début album Hotel Cabana peak at number two in the charts.

And now his latest single has rocketed to fourth place on the UK iTunes chart within a week of release, although it remains to be seen how it performs on today’s Official UK Top 40 Singles Chart announced on Radio One. The song, accompanied by an ethereal, underwater music video, features soulful vocals from Queen Bey alongside up-and-coming singer Arrow Benjamin, who initially wrote the track.

“I always like to introduce new talent on my songs,” says Shahid, who tips singer Ava Lily and Manchester indie band Prose for success in the future.

But he could never have guessed he would be working with the likes of Beyoncé, although at the time of our interview he had not met the singer face-to-face.

“It was just the power of the song,” he explains, when I ask how he got her onboard with the project. “Someone played it to her, she is still just as passionate about music as she always has been.”

It’s been yet another busy year for Shahid, who this summer took part in a special Proms performance with BBC Asian Network at the Royal Albert Hall.

“The BBC asked if I would be up for it and I wasn’t sure at first, because it is such a big thing,” he remembers. “Initially, I was like: ‘Should I do this? Am I going to mess it up?’”

But he certainly didn’t mess it up, performing a set of four songs finished off by a phenomenal performance of powerful Lifted with Emeli Sandé and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra.

“It was surreal. I didn’t want to make it like a beats, digital thing because it was important for people to hear it in its pure form,” he reflects, before adding that he would like to do it again, but not before other people have had an opportunity. For now he’s working on many exciting new projects including a new album which is promised to be out next year.

“Definitely expect some Emeli,” he teases, before going on to say he’s also been working with noughties popstar Natasha Bedingfield - “she’s definitely getting ready for a comeback”. It was also reported earlier this week he is going to be working on a track with Janet Jackson featuring Missy Elliott.

Naughty Boy has to return on set but leaves me with these parting words.

“I will never forget this park, so many memories.

“I never thought I would be back home shooting a trailer for ITV but I suppose my whole journey has been without ever knowing what is going to happen next.

“If I stop calling it home then my mum’s not going to be very happy.”
