A school in Abbots Langley decided they weren’t going to let the snow get in the way and organised a "great team effort" of volunteers to clear up in time for the start of the day.

After the heavy flurry of snow at the weekend, Abbots Langley Primary School took to their blog, twitter, email and text to ask parents, staff and pupils for help to clear the school site and car park from 8:30am on Monday morning.

All staff members, 30 parents and children braved the cold with a shovel in hand to help clear the snow and salt the site just in time for a 10am start.

Roger Billing, headteacher at the school in Parsonage Close, said: "It was a great team effort and everyone seemed happy to help.

"We were keen to keep the school open because all staff members were in to run a worthwhile day. "It was greatly appreciated by parents, who brought along their shovels too.

"The children enjoyed a slightly longer play time of 40 minutes to enjoy the snow and a worthwhile day of maths, science and English lessons took place."

Since being a headteacher at the school from September last year, Mr Billing has encouraged online interaction with parents, through online class blogs and twitter interaction, which enabled him to get the word out about the snow clear up.

Mr Billing added: "The class blogs give parents a chance to see what their child is doing and even family members from overseas can have a look.

"Communication is vital, we should be making use of what is out there for us. "
