A teenager who has made it to the final of a singing competition says he feels "on top of the world".

James Harvey, of Oakview Close, Watford, was stunned to be awarded a place in the Emunah Musician of the Year finals in March.

The 14-year-old wowed the judges after he managed to hit the high notes during an Italian opera song during the regional heats earlier this month.

He also sung Empty Chairs at Empty Tables from Les Miserables - and managed to keep his cool despite hundreds of other applicants watching him sing.

James, a keen Chelsea supporter, does not know if he will win the competition - but said he entered "for the thrill of it".

He added: "There were so many good singers at the regional heats so I never thought I would get a place in the final.

"When I found out it was just an amazing feeling. My mum was jumping around - I think she was more excited than me.

"I love performing but sometimes I get very nervous but when I am up on stage singing, I feel on top of the world. It is a great feeling."

The pupil, from Yavneh College, Borehamwood, will perform the same two songs in the finals at the Royal College of Music in March, to an audience of over one hundred people.

James, who also enjoys playing cricket, first started singing when he was eight-years-old and said "the rest is history".

He added: "I owe everything to my singing teacher, Duncan Saunderson. It is because of him I am where I am today.

"He has really been encouraging me for this competition. I am looking forward to the finals now."
