EGGS and spoons were replaced with batter and frying pans in Rickmansworth yesterday (Tuesday), when 12 teams lined up to compete in the annual pancake race.

Like the parents race at a school sports day, some teams were better prepared, and more determined, than others but reigning champions Freedom, a telecoms company based in the town, held on to win their fourth title in five years.

To start the event, runners lined up outside Iceland before Three Rivers District Council chairman David Major set them on their way.

More than 100 people lined the rain-soaked high street, which was shut to traffic for the event, to cheer the teams as they flipped an increasingly frail pancake.

Three heats narrowed the field and Freedom were joined in the final by VOCA, a bank payment services company, and a team from the Coach and Horses pub, who sponsored the event.

It was a close start but Freedom - Alex Thomas, John Daly, Kevin Dee and Leon Frodsham - pulled away from the chasing pack and kept the lead to the finish.

The event helped to raise more than £500 for Watford Mencap, who provide a range of services for disabled people and their carers.

Dick Morgan, the Coach and Horses landlord, is now planning a summer road race to raise even more money for charity.
