Virgin Media customers have been warned to ignore a scam email asking them to reveal their billing details.

The email tells recipients their latest payments have not been processed and their account will be disconnected unless they enter their personal information on a fake website.

Les Mead, of Ricksmansworth, was targeted.

He said: “I was going through my emails and found one saying my internet was going to be cut off because I had not paid, but I was suspicious because I use direct debit.

“I rang Virgin and they said there has been a lot of calls about this particular email and it should be ignored.

“I want to make sure as many people as possible hear about this so they don’t get caught out. There have been similar scam emails pretending to be from AOL. People just need to think.”

A Virgin Media spokesperson said: “Unscrupulous attempts to get people to hand over personal information do happen unfortunately.

“If anyone receives an email claiming their Virgin Media billing details are incomplete, they should not provide any information. Instead, please report it to us at virginmedia.com/netreport so we can work with the authorities to stop this at source."
