Battle re-enactment, military vehicles and jive dancing were just some of the events taking place at the Second World War heritage site in Bushey last weekend.

The Lincolnsfield Children's Centre in Bushey Hall Road hosted it's ninth forties family experience at the former USA eighth fighter commander headquarters.

At least 500 people turned up to see around 20 re-enactment groups, the most popular being the battle, as well as visiting the forties house and the information board of bombers.

Rachel Collins, children's services manager at the centre said: "The event was splendid and very successful. There was a very congenial atmosphere and everyone had a great time."

Some of the volunteers for the centre are also evacuees from the war, who told their tales to visitors.

The 44-year-old added: "Some people come back just to get a sense of the forties like our volunteers.

"The battles always seems to be the most popular but there were a lot of people who came just to find out about the history of the place. It's nice that the word has spread a people know that we are here."
