A couple, who had their wedding rings stolen from their home in Bushey, were reunited with them in time for their big day.

Police were called to Herne Road, shortly after 2pm on Tuesday, March 10, after a resident reported seeing two men in their neighbour's garden.

Officers rushed to the address along with two dog units and support from the police helicopter. When they arrived both men fled the scene - officers chased the burglars and one man was arrested.

The second man was arrested later, after a neighbour saw him jumping over the fence in King George Park and called the police.

While trying to get awayt the burglars disposed of the items they had stolen, which included jewellery, alcohol, perfumes, an iPod docking station, sunglasses and also the wedding rings.

The two men, Rodney Brown, 31, and Lee Green, 30, were charged with burglary and appeared St Albans Crown Court on March 26.

Both men, who have no fixed address, pleaded guilty to the charge and have been sentenced. Brown was jailed for 18 months and Green was jailed for 29 months.

All items stolen were recovered apart from the wedding rings, however, after questioning the men, the location of where the rings were eventually discovered and they were returned to the couple in time for their wedding at the end of March.

Detective Inspector Matt Phillips said: "I’m over the moon that we were able to find the wedding rings as this burglary could have potentially ruined the couple’s big day. It was an emotional moment for all involved when officers went round to give them the good news and hand them back.

"This is another incident, where members of the public have called us as soon as they have seen something suspicious, which meant that officers got to the location quickly and caught the burglars. "I’d like to thank residents for being so vigilant and ask people to continue to ring us if they see anything suspicious."
