Five dogs and their handlers have passed a drug detection course that will soon see them working across Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire.

They started the course on May 26, which was held in Kempston, and finished on Thursday.

Two of the dogs were not deemed suitable for the training and a new dog joined the course.

Billy, Charlie, Duke, Pearl and Tank have now all officially joined the Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Hertfordshire (BCH) Dog Unit as licensed police dogs.

The six week course saw the Labradors and Spaniels, aged between 12 months and two years old, and their handlers complete a number of exercises around detecting controlled drugs.

Small quantities of drugs were hidden in increasingly difficult places, including houses and vehicles, where there are numerous places to hide and disguise items.

Additionally, the training team also taught the dogs to detect cash and ammunition.
